The Full Avengers: Infinity War (Mental and Emotional) Breakdown

SPOILERS AHEAD. If you have not seen Infinity War yet, do not pass Go, do not collect $200, get your ass off the computer and into a movie theater immediately. I’m about to spoil the shit out of this movie. Also, why the eff have you not seen Infinity War yet? Get out of here.

Okay, now that we have established the fact that this post CONTAINS SPOILERS (seriously, I do not want to hear any whining about how I ruined the movie for someone) we are going to break this down. Much like my heart and soul have been broken down. And stomped on. And burned to ash. I’ve got reactions (so many feels) and all kinds of theories to share with you/obsess over from now until May of 2019.

What Happens and Reactions

Okay, so I have now seen IW twice. I really needed that second time to fully digest everything because the first viewing was pure emotion. So. many. emotions. I mean, guys, I was literally crying within the first ten minutes. And not like my eyes welled, like tears were streaming down my face. So let’s just dive right in, shall we? Loki is dead. Right at the moment that he and Thor were really starting to figure things out and he was turning out to be not such a terrible person. Side note: In between IW viewings one and two, I watched Thor: Ragnarok for the millionth time, and the mid-credits scene is devastating knowing what I know now. Total emotional breakdown aside, talk about a way to open a movie. We jump RIGHT in. Loss of a major character, and Thanos has two infinity stones within minutes. I think it was clear from this scene that shit is going to go down hard in this movie.

After our Asgardians’ lives are destroyed, we head to New York for a check in with Tony and Pepper, that in my Iron Man is meh mind was unnecessary. I know why they put it in, but I didn’t care about their little engagement announcement. Doctor Strange pops in and brings Tony to the Sanctum. I was surprised by how important Doctor Strange was to this movie as a whole. I definitely need to go back and rewatch his solo movie because I didn’t absorb everything I needed to in order to really appreciate his role in this film. And based on some of my theories, he is going to have an even bigger role in the next part. My favorite part of this little section with Tony and Doctor Strange is that Strange calls him a douchebag. LOLed at that both times. I like to think of this part of the movie as the gathering of Team New York: Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man. Bruce hangs out with them for a hot second, but ends up moving on to Team Wakanda.

One of my favorite scenes is when an unprecedented event occurs: a clash of two Chrises. Yes, I know Hemsworth and Evans have teamed up before, but it’s nothing like the battle of wits that happens between the Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor. Star Lord is clearly intimidated by Thor’s physical perfection (as Drax says, it’s like a pirate and an angel had a baby) and hilarity ensues. Thor takes Groot and Rocket to an unpronounceable planet to make a substitute hammer while the rest of the Guardians head to Knowhere to get the reality stone from Tivan. Of course upon arrival, they find Thanos has already taken the stone, and he manages to kidnap Gamora.

At this point, Thanos has three stones. He is lacking the soul stone, the time stone, and the mind stone. Strange has the time stone, Vision has the mind stone, and only Gamora knows where to find the soul stone. After Thanos tortures Nebula, Gamora takes him to get the soul stone, only to find he must sacrifice someone he loves in order to possess it. She laughs, because clearly Thanos doesn’t love anyone. Except her. So he tosses her off a cliff and I bawl my eyes out. I seriously did not see that one coming. That was a tough pill to swallow. RIP Gamora.

Team New York ends up on Titan, attempting to surprise Thanos and end him on his home planet. The Guardians also end up there, looking for Gamora. Doctor Strange goes into the future, and it does not look good. Of the 14 million options he sees, Thanos is only defeated once. But the two teams come up with a plan together, and things are actually looking okay for them-they almost have the Gauntlet off Thanos-when it is revealed that Gamora is dead and Quill loses his shit, understandably. Thanos stabs Tony and it seems like he is going to die, but Strange says he will give Thanos the time stone if he spares Tony. This is going to be important.

In the meantime, Vision and Wanda have their romantic getaway interrupted by two of the Children of Thanos, who are there to take the mind stone. Luckily, they are saved by Cap, Black Widow, and Falcon. Team Wakanda heads to Africa because only Shuri the badass science chick can remove the stone without killing Vision. The culminating battle on Earth happens in Wakanda, as I’m sure you’ve seen in the trailers. The most upsetting part of the battle comes when Wanda is forced to destroy the stone in Vision’s head (Shuri didn’t have enough time to get it out before the aliens attacked), therefore killing him. Oh but wait, Thanos has the time stone, so he rewinds time, takes the stone himself, and completes his set. At the end of the movie, Thanos has all six stones, and with a snap of his fingers, people starting disappearing. They dissolve into tiny pieces and float away on the air. Floaters include (but are not limited to): Bucky, Black Panther, Falcon, Groot, Drax, Quill, Wanda, Strange, and Spider-Man, who says the most heart-breaking goodbye to Tony. If that didn’t hit your heart, you have no soul.

And that’s how the movie ends. Except not really, because it’s Marvel. There is only one end credits scene in the film, and it comes at the very end. We see Fury and Hill ambushed by a car driven by no one. Fury manages to send off a message on a 90’s era pager before he and Hill float away. The final shot is the message going through, and Captain Marvel’s sign appearing on the pager.

Phew. Okay. Some thoughts. I fucking loved this movie. If you try to tell me this isn’t an amazing movie-going experience I will punch you in the face. There is humor, there is heart, there is a buttload of action. There are some truly awesome moments that those of us who are invested in the MCU can only love. This is the NINETEENTH movie in this franchise, and I could not have asked for a better beginning to the end. Yes, there’s a total cliffhanger WTF ending, but if you weren’t expecting that, that’s on you. We know Avengers 4 is coming in May of 2019, so IW is like part one of the end of the saga. And it was perfection. You cannot convince me otherwise.

Theories

First and foremost, the floaters are not dead. Logically, we know that we are getting more Spider-Man and Black Panther movies (I don’t think BP has been officially announced, but it made waaaay too much money for them to not do another one). We know they are doing another Guardians movie and Rocket was the only Guardian who didn’t float. So those guys might be gone, but they are not dead. Loki is dead, Gamora is dead, and most likely, Vision is dead. If you’ll notice, the original Avengers-Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, and Cap-all survived the disappearing. I don’t think that’s an accident.

On Titan, Doctor Strange sees all possible outcomes in the future and states very clearly that Thanos is only defeated in one possible outcome. Strange then sacrifices the time stone-which he is sworn to protect at all possible costs-in order to save Tony’s life. So clearly Tony is going to play a major role in the eventual defeat of Thanos. My guess is that Tony and Cap are going to save the world together, and both die in the process. We know Chris Evans is done after Avengers 4, so it would make sense for he and Tony to have to settle their differences in order to save the universe from Thanos.

There are some notable characters missing from IW, namely Clint, Ant Man, and Valkyrie. Valkyrie is the most frustrating because we know she was on the ship with Thor and Loki, yet we get no mention of her. Thor does say that half of his people were killed, so I’m holding out hope that the other half are with Valkyrie somewhere safe. Black Widow gives us a lame excuse for Scott and Clint’s absences, but I would have to think that Clint will show up in the second part of the movie. We will check in with Scott in Ant Man and the Wasp in July, which will hopefully provide us with some clues for part two. In March of 2019, we are getting a Captain Marvel film, which is a flashback movie that takes place in the 1990’s (which hopefully means it will have a kickass soundtrack). But obviously she is going to play a role in part two since Fury paged her in the credits.

Honestly, the only thing I know for sure is that the second part to this movie is going to be amazing, if it’s anything like Infinity War. I cannot put into words how much I loved this movie. If you agree, let me know what you loved in the comments. If you disagree, get the eff out ;o)

MCU Viewing Part Eleven: Thor Ragnarok, Black Panther, and Agents of SHIELD

Please, right now, in your head or out loud, start singing one of two themes: Pomp and Circumstance or Star Wars. This is an epic moment, and it deserves an epic soundtrack. Tomorrow at 7:00 pm PST, I will be sitting in my local movie theater’s amazing recliner seats and settling in for two hours and forty minutes of pure, unfiltered Avengers. I’m both so excited I LITERALLY can’t even, and terrified that I am going to be a huddling mass of tears by the end of it. I will have all of my reactions to Infinity War coming at you Thursday night, but for today, we have one final, important piece of business to take care of: the end of my MCU challenge. To be honest, I expected there to be some kind of like amazing, adrenaline rush at the end of all this, but it kind of fizzled to a halt for a couple of reasons. One, the final two movies were ones I had recently seen so I didn’t do a special challenge viewing. And two, Agents of SHIELD has been weird this season. But more on that later. It is the final moments of this epic challenge, and for that I am excited. Without further ado, I give you, the final piece of the MCU puzzle. (If this is your first time checking in, scroll all the way down for links to the rest of the posts in the series.)

Thor: Ragnarok

The Basics: Released in November of 2017 by Disney and Marvel Studios, Thor: Ragnarok reunites Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, while also introducing us to a new villain played by Cate Blanchett and a new badass female hero played by Tessa Thompson.

One Sentence Summary: Thor and Loki get in a in a fight with their big sis.

Full Summary: Please click here for an actual plot synopsis.

End Credits Scenes: The first one is both ominous and mysterious. Thor and Loki are chatting on their way to Earth when a huge spaceship passes in front of them. I’m assuming this is some kind of Infinity War foreshadowing. In the final one, the Grandmaster is taken down by the very people he has been oppressing. #karma

My Reaction: I mean, clearly I love this movie. I wrote a whole blog post about it, and ranked it numero uno on my Marvel countdown list. This movie is really the one that sparked my desire to even complete this challenge in the first place. No matter how many times I watch it, I still find new things to love. I think what really sells this one for me above the other Thor movies-aside from the humor and improv, which is unmatched in the MCU-is the character development. We see both Thor and Loki experience real growth and change due to the circumstances of this movie, and that is something that is lacking in a lot of the earlier MCU films. I guess I’m a sucker for great characters, because that seems to be what stands out to me in my favorite movies. Speaking of, Valkyrie is an amazing addition to the very small Females of the MCU Club, and she is a badass. Seriously, Tessa Thompson is one of the most versatile actresses around, and she is a huge part of the reason why I love this movie. It rules, and you cannot change my opinion on that.

My Rating: 9.5 out of 10. Boom. I went there.

Black Panther

The Basics: Released in February of 2018 by Disney and Marvel Studios, Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, and Lupita Nyong’o, among many, many other extremely talented cast members. Oh, and it has kicked so much box office ass. So so much.

One Sentence Summary: Wakanda Forever.

Full Summary: If you want to know what actually happens in the movie, click here.

End Credits Scenes: In the first one, we see T’Challa speaking to a room of diplomats stating that Wakanda is going to start sharing its resources with the rest of the world. In the second one, Shuri goes to visit Bucky (!!) who is no longer frozen and is now healing in Wakanda.

My Reaction: Guys. There is so much to say about this movie, but I’ll just start with the obvious: representation matters. The importance of this film goes so far beyond the consequences of the MCU. And honestly, it’s just really, really well done. Not only is it funny, thrilling, and visually awesome, but the story is so well-developed. And the most important part for me is that T’Challa surrounds himself with kickass women, who fill various roles in Wakandan society. Shuri being an intelligent inventor and engineer, Nakia works undercover to help people in need, and Okoye is a powerful and respected military leader. These women rule. And if you want to look at the film through the most basic of lenses, this is a creation story with layers, and character development. We learn about family, we think about morality, and on top of that, we get to see an entertaining movie. Enough good things cannot be said about Black Panther. It is by far the best creation story in the MCU, and I am going into Infinity War with high expectations from T’Challa, because I have a great sense of who his character is.

My Rating: 9.5 out of 10, ’nuff said.

Agents of SHIELD, Season 5, Episodes 1-18

The Basics: Premiering on ABC in December of 2017, Agents of SHIELD season five reunites all major players from the previous seasons.

One Sentence Summary: Am I watching X-Files?

Full Summary: For an episodic breakdown, click here.

My Reaction: I am strug-gggg-ling with this season of Agents of SHIELD. I don’t know what happened, I don’t know if it’s me or the show, but this season has been rough. Which sucks, because the end of season four was sooooo good (though it did take me a while to get into season four, but we left on a high note so I had high expectations). At the end of season four, the gang was captured and (supposedly) arrested for their crimes in the whole Framework deal. But they were actually taken by aliens and sent to Earth in the future. Everyone except Fitz. Suffice to say, I hated 99% of what happened in the future. I love Deke, and that’s about it. The villains sucked, and not in a good way. I don’t need to see another crybaby man who didn’t get affection from his dad and now decides to kill everyone because of it. The effects were terrible, the fighting was meh at best, and the dialogue was just bad. The only highlight from the first twelve episodes was the Fitz-Simmons wedding. And the main highlight of the next six episodes was, surprisingly, Dove Cameron’s performance as Ruby in last week’s episode. Here’s where I think the problem with this season lies: Ragnarok came out right before the season premiered, and Black Panther came out in the middle of the season, and yet the show has made no reference to either of them. The majority of the other MCU movies have gotten at least a mention in an episode, if not some kind of storyline tie in. Why not have T’Challa’s press conference on in the background? Why not mention Asgard blew up and Thor is bringing an entire planet of people to live on Earth? And more pressingly, with the biggest MCU crossover event in the studio’s history happening this week, why not tie it in to the show? I don’t see how they can fit in an Infinity War link in the last few episodes without it coming out of nowhere and derailing the rest of the season. I don’t know. Something just seems off. I was hoping that AoS this season would be an actual part of the MCU and it just didn’t happen. Also, the scheduling is very strange. Last week we saw episode 18. Avengers is technically premiering on Thursday at 7:00 pm, even though the “release date” is Friday. So thousands of people will have seen the film before this week’s AoS episode on Friday night. And we still have four more episodes before the season ends. It’s very confusing, and honestly the season feels totally separate from the rest of the MCU and that sucks. I’m kinda bummed because I had high hopes for this season.

My Rating: 6 out of 10, and it would be lower if it weren’t for the wedding.

Gah. I can’t believe it’s done! My life is now empty and meaningless. Luckily, tomorrow I have something to live for! Thank you so much for accompanying me on this journey. It has been a lot of hours, and a lot of time spent on my couch watching movies and shows and living in the MCU. But I wouldn’t change a second of it (well, maybe the Daredevil portions) and I am so happy you came along with me for the ride!

My Definitive Marvel Movie Rankings (So Far)

Well friends, it’s official. I have watched all of the films comprising the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s been a hell of a ride, and I am almost finished with my entire MCU Challenge. For today’s post, I’m sharing with you my rankings of all eighteen Marvel movies and how they rate in terms of my favorites. I want to make that really clear: this is not a best of list, it’s a my favorites list. For me, I’m ranking these movies based on a couple of key factors, but the main criteria is whether or not I would watch the movie multiple times. Some of these rankings might be controversial. But that’s how I roll. Drum roll please…

#18 Incredible Hulk: Honestly, if you disagree with this pick, you should probably just leave right now. This movie feels the most disconnected from what we have come to know and expect of the MCU. And the fact that Mark Ruffalo is not Hulk makes it hard to accept this movie.

#17 Doctor Strange: I don’t have a huge problem with this movie, it just didn’t capture my interest as much as some of the others, which is a shame because I love Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel McAdams. I wish it had more humor and less motion sickness inducing visuals.

#16 Iron Man 3: I am not an Iron Man lover. He’s just not my fave. I realize that Iron Man fans love him the most, but that just ain’t me. My favorite part of this movie was the end credits. I don’t mean that in a snarky way either, the credits are legit awesome.

#15 Iron Man 2: See above.

#14: Ant-Man: I am fully aware I may come under fire for ranking Ant-Man above Iron Man, but the simple truth of the matter is Ant-Man is funny AF. The Drunk History lip-syncing, story-telling scenes are gold. Paul Rudd and Michael Pena are a dream. I stand by my choice.

#13 Thor: The Dark World: Thor is my boo, so obviously his movies get a little bit of a boost. Though despite my intense and undying love for Chris Hemsworth, the shining star of this movie is Tom Hiddleston. All the love for Thor and Loki.

#12 Thor: Even I can admit that this movie has some problems, and is seriously lacking in the character development department, but not only do we get to meet Thor in this movie, but we also get to fall in love with Coulson, who gets all my heart eyes until the end of time.

#11 Iron Man: I can appreciate the humor and Iron Man’s creation story, and the fact that I ranked this above Thor should earn me some points.

#10 Captain America: Winter Soldier: Here’s where things start to get tough. The remainder of the films on this list are all GREAT movies. I love them all, and I will truthfully watch all of them again multiple times. So I have to just go with my gut and make some hard choices. I love Bucky, I love Sam, and I LOVE Cap. The only reason this is the lowest ranking of the Cap movies is because it’s a little darker than the others.

#9 Captain America: If you can watch this movie and not walk away loving Cap, then you have no soul and we can’t be friends. Plus, Peggy is the shit and she will be my girl for lyfe.

#8 Captain America: Civil War: No one can argue with the awesomeness that is this movie. It’s basically a mini Avengers title, and sets the stage for so much else that happens in the MCU.

#7 Avengers: Age of Ultron: Okay, in all honesty, I don’t love this movie with the passion that I love some of the others. HOWEVER, it is so essential in the MCU that it deserves this ranking.

#6 Black Panther: I love so much about this movie, it almost pains me that it’s not in the top five. Black Panther is so good on so many levels, but my favorite part about it is the badassness of the ladies of Wakanda. Shuri is the best Disney princess ever.

#5 Spider-Man Homecoming: Didn’t see that coming, did ya? This one kind of surprised me too, but honestly, this movie is so well done, and so effing funny, that I can see myself watching it again and again. Tom Holland is the cutest, and I love the supporting cast, so I’m here for it.

#4 Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2: Since humor is one of my favorite traits in the MCU, it should come as no surprise that GotG ranks among my faves. I could watch the Guardians on repeat. And bonus: my kid love them.

#3 Guardians of the Galaxy: See above.

#2 Avengers: I mean, this title deserves its spot for the sole reason that it set the stage for everything else to come. I don’t know that the rest of the MCU would have been so successful if not for this movie. It’s so well done on all levels that it really set the tone for the rest of the experience.

#1 Thor: Ragnarok: I realize that this may be an unpopular choice. But I have now watched this movie six or seven times and it gets me every time. I laugh, I cry, I am on the edge of my seat. I love the improv, I love Valkyrie, I love Loki’s redemption. You could argue I’m in it for the hotness of CH, but to that I would say, look how low his other movies ranked. Honestly, I will watch this movie forever, and I will love it every single time. Fight me.

I KNOW you don’t all agree with my rankings, so please, let’s have at it! What’s your number one? Where did my list go wrong? Where did it go oh so right? Share your thoughts!

MCU Viewing Part Ten: Doctor Strange, Agents of SHIELD, and Spider-Man Homecoming

Friends, we are just a couple of weeks away from the most important day of 2018: Avengers Infinity War release day. I am so ridiculously excited for this movie. I. cannot. wait. And since cutting out the fat (aka the Netflix shows) from my watch list, I have been cruising through the last few shows and movies to watch before AIW. I think I will eventually go back and at least try some of the Netflix shows I’ve skipped, but for now, I am going to live in my happy ABC/Disney MCU bubble. If this is your first time checking out one of my MCU posts, I suggest you start here and work your way back. On with the show!

Doctor Strange

The Basics: Released in 2016 by Marvel Studios and Disney, Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Rachel McAdams. Doctor Strange is available on Netflix as of the publish date of this post.

One Sentence Summary: Super egotistical rich doctor loses the use of his hands and finds his way to Hogwarts…I mean, some other spiritual magic place.

Full Summary: For the complete breakdown, check out this link.

End Credits Scenes: This first one was a little odd because it is a scene that appears in Thor Ragnarok. I’m assuming it’s altered slightly, but I’ve seen Thor four times and it seems the same to me. It’s the scene when Thor and Strange are sitting and having a beer and Thor’s mug keeps refilling. In the second credits scene, Mordo is stealing power from other sorcerers, which I assume will be important at some point.

My Reaction: So this was not my fave, despite my intense love for Benny C and Rachel McAdams. I’m really glad I didn’t see this movie in the theater because I think it would have given me motion sickness. Even watching it at home, there were a few times when I had to look away. I hardly have any notes written about the film because even though it had an interesting premise and great acting, I was kind of bored by the end of the movie. I really liked the Doctor Strange appearance in Ragnarok, so I’m hoping for more of that kind of humor in his future appearances. In general, what I took away about Doctor Strange is that he is kind of a cross between Iron Man and Harry Potter. Also, give Benedict his accent back. Also, no capes!

My Rating: 7.5 out of 10, love the people and the visuals, bored by the story.

Agents of SHIELD, Season 4

The Basics: Premiering on ABC in September of 2016, season four brings back the original cast, minus Brett Dalton, and with a few new editions.

One Sentence Summary: Ghosties and robots.

Full Summary: Check out this page for an episode by episode breakdown.

My Reaction: Okay, first just to clear one thing up. Originally, my list had this season broken down into two halves, but since I took out Iron Fist, I watched the whole thing in order. A LOT happened, but the second half of the season was definitely my favorite. I didn’t love the whole ghosty storyline in the first half, though I really like Robbie, and I want him to come back.I actually wrote down how much I love that Coulson and May are just friends while watching episode 7, which was stupid of me because that of course meant that they kissed later in the season, even though it wasn’t really them. I was iffy on the whole robot plot in the beginning, but things took a serious turn for me once everyone was in the Framework and we shifted to Agents of Hydra. Seeing the gang in the Framework was fascinating, and of course, I was thrilled to see Ward back. I really, really loved that Ward got a little tiny bit of redemption in those few episodes. It was so nice to see the Ward we met in the beginning of season one. On the flip side, seeing evil Fitz was hard, but super interesting. I also loved seeing Tripp again, I was really bummed that he was killed off so early in the series, I would have liked to have seen more from him. I thought the whole premise of the regrets was a great storyline, and it’s a cool concept to think about how one tiny detail can have such a huge impact on the course of someone’s life.

My Rating: 8 out of 10, it was really only the last six episodes that had me feeling the feels.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

The Basics: Released in 2017 by Sony, Marvel, and Columbia, Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Robert Downey Jr., Jon Favreau, and Michael Keaton. This is interesting timing because it was made before Disney had hold of Spider-Man so even though it has the Disney/Marvel feel, it is not technically a Disney/Marvel release. If you want to rent the movie, you have to sign up for a free trial of Starz through Amazon Prime.

One Sentence Summary: Teenage angsty Spider-Man tries to prove himself worthy of being an Avenger and mostly causes more problems than he solves.

Full Summary: Read a full breakdown here.

End Credits Scenes: Now in jail, Toomes has the opportunity to reveal Peter’s identity to another inmate, but he doesn’t. In the second scene, we see Cap’s PSA for utilizing patience.

My Reaction: This movie is hilarious and baby Spider-Man is all kinds of adorable (also, abs). The home movies that Peter makes during Civil War are priceless. Cap’s random phys ed/sex ed/detention motivational movies are the stuff of dreams. Zendaya is awesome as the moody, smart chick. There is a crazy plot twist that I won’t reveal that I so did not see coming. Basically, I really, really liked this movie. It had everything I love about Marvel movies, from the fight scenes to the humor, to the heartfelt moments. Nerdy teenage Spider-Man is the best, and I am living for him. However, I would like to mention that Peter and his friend build a Lego Death Star in this movie, which makes his line in Civil War (you know the one, where he calls it that old space movie and doesn’t know the proper name for an AT-AT) all the more unbelievable. That still irks me. I’ve never been crazy into Spider-Man, but as long as Tom Holland is playing Peter Parker, you can sign me up (also, for the record, he is 21 so it’s totally okay for me to stare at his abs). On a personal note, Matt and I actually watched this one together because Matt (wrongly) thinks that Michael Keaton is the best Batman, so for him, it was cool to see him in the villain role.

My Rating: 9 out of 10, solely for the humor.

Guys, with three and a half weeks until Infinity War, all I have left to watch is Agents of SHIELD season five, Ragnarok, and Black Panther, and I’ve already seen both movies. Let the final countdown begin!

MCU Viewing Part Nine: Agents of SHIELD and Captain America Civil War

Aaaaahhhhhhh. That’s my nice long sigh of relief to be back in the Marvel world that I love the mostest. Y’all know I have been struggling with the Netflix/Marvel partnership series and it has been putting a serious kink in my motivation to get this shizz finished before Infinity War. But I flew through this section because it was all the things I love about the MCU! If you need to catch up on my MCU challenge, check out Part Eight before you read this post! (And here’s the original post if you’re interested in going back to the beginning.) And now, bah bah bah bum! Onto the best chunk of the list so far!

Agents of SHIELD, Season 3, Episodes 11-19

The Basics: Produced by Marvel Studios and ABC, season three premiered in September of 2015 and featured all of the original lead cast. Season three is available on Netflix.

One Sentence Summary: The fate of the Inhumans is in the balance as Hydra and Hive (aka the former Grant Ward) try to experiment on them to create a crazy powerful army.

Full Summary: Check out the detailed episodic breakdown here.

My Reaction: ALL THE FEELS. First and foremost, when the team gave Bobbi and Hunter the “spy’s goodbye” I cried my mother effing eyes out. Like tears streaming down my face, huffing in my breath, actual sobs. On top of that, we FINALLY got our Fitz-Simmons love connection and I was living for it. Some other things I loved in this chunk: Mack calling Daisy and Lincoln “Shake and Bake”. Coulson, always Coulson. Finally getting sexy Ward back, even though he’s now an evil POS. Brett Dalton is pretty so I’m okay with it. We finally saw the take down of Hydra, which I was ready for a season ago. And May battled the Chairman from Iron Chef, and it was everything I hoped it would be.

My Rating: 9 out of 10, just for the spy’s goodbye and Fitz-Simmons action.

Captain America: Civil War

The Basics: Released in 2016 by Marvel Studios and Disney, Civil War brings together all of the Avengers except for Thor and Hulk (who are off on their own badass adventure, but we’ll get there soon enough). Civil War is available on Netflix.

One Sentence Summary: The government wants to regulate the Avengers, Tony is on board and Cap is not so the team splits on this issue as well as the issue of Bucky (aka Winter Soldier) and his brainwashing/crimes.

Full Summary: A lot goes on in this movie, so if you want the full lowdown, you can read it here.

My Reaction: This movie marks a turning point in the MCU, not just in terms of the characters’ storylines, but in terms of the quality of the films. We all know both Avengers films were great, and we know the Guardians of the Galaxy films are great, but for the most part, up until this point, the individual movies have been just okay. Not terrible, but not stellar. Civil War changes that (maybe because it feels more like an Avenger movie than an individual movie?). But from here on in, the individual movies are pretty freakin’ awesome. I love that this movie tackles some real issues: mainly the idea of government regulation, and the morality of sacrificing the life of one to save the lives of many. All interesting things to think about. In terms of things I loved in this movie: I love meeting Black Panther, I love seeing the evolution of Bucky, I love the quote “conflict breeds catastrophe”, I love Baby Spider-man. I love that Bucky’s cell is D23. I love Paul Rudd. I don’t love Cap and Iron Man fighting. I don’t love Peggy dying. I don’t love Cap kissing Peggy’s niece. I don’t love Vision and Wanda falling for each other considering Paul Bettany could be Elizabeth Olsen’s dad. And really, truly, how the eff am I supposed to believe that a nerdy 17 year old Peter Parker doesn’t know what an AT-AT is? I mean, my three year old knows what an AT-AT is. Writing fail. It’s a glaring error in an otherwise practically perfect script.

My Rating: 9 out of 10, by far the best of the individual movies up until this point.

Agents of SHIELD, Season 3, Episodes 20-22

The Basics: Same as above.

One Sentence Summary: The hot guys die.

Full Summary: Click here if you want the full breakdown of the final three episodes.

My Reaction: In the aftermath of Civil War, the world is dealing with the Inhumans and making them register themselves so the government can track them. All kinds of changes are happening at SHIELD. There’s some great acting in these final episodes, particularly from Brett Dalton, as we see the final take down of Hive, which sadly comes about due to Lincoln sacrificing himself for the greater good (an ongoing theme in the MCU that I think we will see again in Infinity War). Lincoln and Ward were two of my favorites, so to see them meet their end in the same episode was heartbreaking, though it was needed. I’m kind of scared about season four at this point because we lost a lot of team members this season, and from the last little snippet in the finale, it seems like we may be losing Daisy too. I don’t love the events themselves, but I loved how the season finale played out, the whole thing was really well done.

My Rating: 9.5 out of 10, the best SHIELD finale so far.

I might as well make this announcement now because I have reached my breaking point. I have decided to eliminate the Netflix standalone series from the remainder of my MCU challenge. Life is too short to watch shitty TV. I’ve watched two seasons of Daredevil, one of Jessica Jones, and half of Luke Strange. I’ve given it my best effort. I’m going to attempt The Defenders and Inhumans, but I make no promises to finish them. Honestly, the movies and Agents of SHIELD are the core of the MCU and that’s where I’m going to focus the rest of my attention from now on. Word.

MCU Chronological Viewing Part Eight: Jessica Jones, Agents of SHIELD, and Daredevil

As I look at my MCU checklist, hanging above my desk and mocking me with how much farther I have to go, I have to say, I’m not all that excited. I think I have discovered that I don’t really like the Netflix/Marvel collaborations and that is the majority of what I have left. There’s so many, I don’t know if I can suffer through. Luckily, I have Agents of SHIELD to get me through, plus the bonus of Ragnarok being on the horizon. I will suffer for Chris Hemsworth. For today, it’s mostly stuff I didn’t love so I’m not going to spend a ton of time on it, just fill you in on the basics. If you’re new here, start with this post, then move on to Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five, Part Six, and Part Seven. Then if you don’t hate me, come back to this post.

Jessica Jones, Season 1

The Basics: Released in November of 2015 by Marvel and Netflix, Jessica Jones stars Krysten Ritter, David Tennant, and Carrie-Ann Moss.

One Sentence Summary: Jessica Jones is a PI with superhuman strength who must defeat Kilgrave-a man who can control the thoughts of everyone around him except for her.

Full Summary: Check out this link for an episode by episode plot breakdown.

My Reaction: So in general, I liked this one more than I liked either season of Daredevil. Probably because it has a bunch of chicks who kick ass in it. I was definitely intrigued by the first episode, and maybe even had some hopes that I would actually like the show. But I totally lost interest a couple episodes in and it was hard for me to get back. Every time I see David Tennant, I think of Barty Crouch in the Harry Potter movies, and I don’t see him as someone appealing in any way, shape, or form. He also did a version of Hamlet that was atrocious, and it’s hard for me to recover from that. I like a lot about Jessica herself. I like that she is flawed and troubled and has some real issues with dealing with her emotions. I also like Jessia’s best friend Trish and her backstory. But in addition to Kilgrave, this show has one of the worst characters I have ever seen on a show or in a movie: Robyn. Robyn is this psychotic, whiny, incestual brat who is literally the most unlikeable character on the face of the Earth. Seriously, I hated her so much that I tuned out every time she was on screen. And she did not serve a great enough purpose for me to have to put up with her obnoxious behavior. By the end of season one, I was just glad that it was over, and not really looking forward to season two.

My Rating: 6 out of 10, just couldn’t make myself care about these characters.

Agents of SHIELD, Season 3 Episodes 1-10

The Basics: Released by Marvel and ABC, AoS premiered its third season in September of 2015. The cast remained mostly the same from previous seasons. AoS is available on Netflix.

One Sentence Summary: Ward is reviving Hydra; all kinds of Inhumans are changing; Jemma gets rescued from creepy weird portal planet; Coulson kills Ward; evil death thing from portal planet takes over Ward’s body; Fitz and Simmons kiss; I express love for a character, which means she is promptly killed.

Full Summary: If you would like an episodic breakdown, click here.

My Reaction: Some crazy shit goes down in the first half of this season and I was living for it. It was so nice to come back to AoS after Jessica Jones because more happens in one episode than in that entire season. I LOVED Roz (Constance Zimmer) so of course she had to die, which sucked. I’m digging the whole Monolith storyline, and I am also really into this whole parallel between Inhumans and immigrants. I like my sci-fi with a dash of political reality. And I don’t know what this says about me, but I find myself more and more attracted to Ward the worse he gets. I promise I’m not a psycho, Brett Dalton is just sexy AF. But I do appreciate that Ward is just bad now. Like there’s no chance of redemption, the dude’s just evil. That almost makes it easier to love him because in season two I just wanted him to be the Ward I thought he was when the show started and he just kept disappointing me. Also, Fitz is everything in this half of the season. All the heart eyes for Fitz-Simmons.

My Rating: 9 out of 10, I literally stayed up until four in the morning watching because I could. not. stop.

Daredevil, Season 2

The Basics: Released in March of 2016 by Marvel and Netflix, season two brings back all of the original trio, plus the additions of Jon Bernthal as the Punisher and Elodie Yung as Elektra.

One Sentence Summary: Punisher is taking out gang members, gets arrested and Nelson and Murdock represent him; meanwhile Matt’s ex Elektra recruits him to help her take out some Japanese ninja gang.

Full Summary: Find that shiz here.

My Reaction: Okay. I did, in fact, like this season better than season one. But I still had a lot of problems with it. Some of my comments from the first three episodes: “This is like a bad 1950’s gangster movie”, “These cops are like Stormtroopers”, “This come to Jesus scene with Punisher and DD is God awful writing” (see what I did there?), “Okay, the stairwell fight was pretty cool”. I did like that we added in a kickass chick this season with Elektra, though she did annoy me a lot of the time. But in general, I dig her. I did think it was odd that this season of Daredevil basically encompassed Punisher’s creation story-shouldn’t that happen in his own show? I hated that we had to deal with Fisk again this season. He was one of the worst villains I have seen (and that’s worst as in awfully written and acted, not worst as in appropriately evil) and I did not need to see him again. I LOVED Vincent D’Onofrio when he was on Law and Order and I just hate him in this role. I could have done without the creepy cult kids too. Never okay. And in general, I could use a little less blood and gratuitous violence. So kind of an improvement? But not really.

My Rating: 6 out of 10, I just don’t see the appeal.

Guys, I’m over halfway! And my next batch includes Agents of SHIELD and Civil War, so I’m actually looking forward to this chunk! Woot woot!

MCU Chronological Viewing Part Seven: Avengers Age of Ultron, Agents of SHIELD, and Ant-Man

Guys, I am struggling with this MCU challenge. I maybe should have calculated the hours needed to fulfill this mission before setting out. Actually, it’s probably better that I didn’t. In order to make life easier, I am going to be skipping out on the full plot summary portion of these recaps, because they take forever to write, and there are plenty of great summaries already out there. So I’ll just link to one of those instead. Because ain’t nobody got time for that. If this is your first time checking in for my MCU challenge start here. Then catch up with Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five, and Part Six. And if your eyes aren’t bleeding at that point, come back here! Okay, let’s dive in!

Avengers: Age of Ultron

The Basics: Released in 2015 by Marvel Studios and Disney, Ultron reunites the original Avengers gang. The main casting addition is James Spader as the movie’s villain, Ultron. As of this posting, Age of Ultron is available for rent on Amazon for $3.99.

One Sentence Summary: Tony, along with Banner, creates a program he thinks he is going to protect the world, only to discover he has created a crazy robot who is going to destroy the planet.

Full Summary: You can find a detailed plot synopsis here. But an important takeaway: by the end of this movie, we know the location of four of the Infinity Stones. Vision has one, the Tesseract is on Asgard, Tivan has the Aether, and Nova Corps has the orb. Two are unaccounted for.

End Credits Scene: There is only one credits scene. Thanos seems to be frustrated with his minions. We see him putting on the Infinity Stones glove and saying “I’ll do it myself.”

My Reaction: While I don’t love this one as much as the first Avengers movie, it is so important in the MCU that it is worth watching multiple times. Since I’m not a huge Tony Stark fan, I can live without the whole Tony going crazy storyline we’ve seen multiple times before. But there are some moments I love in this movie. Every time Nat flirts with Banner, the look on Thor’s face when Cap wiggles the hammer, our brief glimpse of Peggy-all awesome. I also like that this movie plants the seed for Civil War. Cap and Tony have two very different ideologies, and though we caught glimpses of that in the first Avengers, we really see it start to develop here. Also, since it’s Black Panther month, I should mention that this is the first time we really hear about Wakanda, and we meet Klaue, who appears in BP. Some other thoughts I had while re-watching this movie: I really want a Cap/Thor crossover film (don’t think that’s going to happen since I’m guessing one of them is going to die in Infinity War), I love the development we get of Black Widow re: her not being able to have kids and live a normal life, and for the first time, I kind of understand the government concerns about the Avengers. They really do destroy a shit-ton of property.

My Rating: 9 out of 10, don’t love it as much as the first, but it’s still an awesome movie.

Agents of SHIELD, Season 2 Episodes 20-22

The Basics: Check out Part Six of the blog post series for the first chunk of season two.

Important Plot Points: Since Coulson came in and saved Sokovia at the end of Ultron, the other faction of SHIELD decides to work with him. The other group becomes the advisory board and Coulson remains director. One of the board members, Gonzales, heads to the Afterlife to meet with Jiaying and come to some sort of agreement. Jiaying doesn’t want to work with SHIELD, so she kills Gonzales and shoots herself to make it look like he attacked her first. This spurns a war with SHIELD, with Skye joining Team Inhumans. Ward kidnaps and tortures Bobbi for her role in Kara’s abduction by Hydra. Ward sets her up so that the person who comes to rescue her (presumably Hunter) will be shot when they enter the room. Bobbi takes the bullet instead, to save Hunter. Cal begins to see Jiaying for the killer that she is, but Skye cannot be convinced. Raina confronts Jiaying about killing Gonzales since Raina can see the future, and Jiaying kills her. Skye witnesses the murder, and turns on her mother. The Inhumans plan to release Terrigen into the atmosphere, killing all the non-Inhumans, and transforming all those with the gene. Fitz, Coulson, and Mack are able to stop them, though Coulson loses a hand in the process. Skye takes possession of the crystals from Jiaying and sends them crashing into the ocean. Jianying tries to kill Skye, but Cal stops her and kills Jiaying instead. SHIELD wipes Cal’s memories and sets him up with a new life. Skye is tasked with creating a team of Inhumans. May heads off on a vacation. Ward begins to resurrect Hydra. The Terrigen crystals start to leak into the ocean. Simmons is sucked into the Monolith.

My Reaction: I’m so glad that Jiaying is dead because the actress playing her was terrible. I hate that Ward continues to be so bad (but look so good), but it seems like he is fully crossed over to the dark side at this point, which is easier to handle than thinking he might actually be doing all this for some good, only to be continually disappointed. The ending of the season was pretty intense, and not what I expected. Lots of death and heartbreak, but nothing more heartbreaking than Simmons disappearing right as we were about to see a love connection between her and Fitz (I just want them to kiss dammit!).

My Rating: 9 out of 10, if Ward could be redeemed, we might be in perfect score territory, but I don’t think that’s gonna happen.

Ant-Man

The Basics: Released in 2015 by Marvel Studios and Disney, Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, and Michael Pena. As of this posting, Ant-Man is available to rent on Amazon for $3.99.

One Sentence Summary: Criminal Scott Lang must redeem himself in the eyes of his daughter, and chooses to do so by becoming Ant-Man in order to save and protect the technology of its creator, Dr. Hank Pym.

Full Summary: You can find a full plot synopsis here.

End Credits Scenes: In the first scene, Pym gives his daughter Hope the Wasp suit. In the second scene, we see Cap and Sam talking about finding Bucky, which will lead into Captain America: Civil War.

My Reaction: I love Paul Rudd, and I have since Clueless, so I will forever love him and anything he does. This movie is up there with Guardians on the humor scale. Michael Pena does these Drunk Historyesque retelling/lip syncing scenes that are absolutely brilliant. We haven’t had an origin story in a while in the MCU, and this one is a nice break from the heavy drama and problems we’ve been seeing in some of the other films. It’s nice to break up the world-ending with some humor. We also have a scene with Sam in this movie, and I love him, so that was cool. The one thing that is weird in this movie is that Evangeline Lilly looks a lot like Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Michael Douglas plays her dad. So yeah, awkward. Not a huge fan of ants in life, but I’m totally down with Ant-Man.

My Rating: 8 out of 10, of the origin stories, it’s one of my faves.

The next section of the checklist to tackle includes Daredevil Season 2, so I’m dreading it. But I am looking forward to jumping back into Agents of SHIELD, so at least I have that to look forward to! Stay tuned!
