WandaVision Episodes 1 and 2
As a devoted MCU fan who has been completely starved for new content over the past year (really, we got so spoiled getting three new movies a year there for a while), I have been anxiously counting down to the premiere of WandaVision. Neither Wanda nor Vision make my list of favorite MCU characters, and not going to lie, the trailers for the show mostly left me scratching my head, but I went into it with an open mind, willing to take whatever scraps I could get.

And after watching the first two episodes, I think I love it? There is a lot to unpack, and obviously with only two episodes to talk about, there is still a lot to come, but I think I’m going to end up really enjoying the show as a whole. First, I do want to give credit to someone out there in the Twitterverse who tweeted something along the lines of “I identify with Wanda because I too turn to TV to escape my hellish life.” That is not a direct quote, and I apologize Twitter person for not saving your wise words for the future. Because after seeing that, everything kind of started to come together in my head. Because we know Vision is dead. This is a thing that happened and I don’t think there is a way to come back from that, especially given how he made zero appearances in the Endgame final battle (unlike Gamora who we can guess is going to be coming back in GOTG3).

So what if the whole concept of WandaVision is Wanda is using TV to cope with her loss? To escape having to deal with her new, Vision-less reality. This sort of alternate universe she creates in her own mind that lets her live a life with Vision that she is never actually going to get. But because this is the MCU, obviously there’s a big bad guy somewhere, lurking and ready to take advantage of Wanda’s grief and capitalize off of it somehow. This is just my working theory after two episodes, but I think it’s plausible.

Now, for the show itself. Honestly, I found the whole thing more entertaining than I thought I would. I think both Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany are super charming and funnier than I expected. And honestly, adding Kathryn Hahn is the best thing you can do to any comedic project because she is a master. I like how we got to see two different decades of TV, and from the previews, it looks like we move into a third in the next episode. I love the commercials. Since I don’t read the comics I’m sure I missed tons of easter eggs, but even without that knowledge, I still found the show incredibly fun to watch. I’m excited to see where the show goes from here, and I’m possibly even more excited to go back and watch the whole thing altogether once all the episodes have been released. Until then, let the theories and speculation commence!

Honestly I love it! Part of it for me is that I grew up watching a lot of old sitcoms (my parents were super into them) so there are a ton of references and the style is just very nostalgic for me in that sense. And then you add in all the MCU stuff and it’s really cool… plus the obvious questions/mystery. Though I’m also kind of dreading it because you know this can’t really end well for Wanda and she’s been through hell. Elizabeth Olsen is killing it. All the actors are great but the complexity in her character is fantastic.
