Free Printable: Joy is Integral to Survival

So I actually came across this phrase before the whole coronavirus quarantine we’re probably all going to die or go broke madness that has become our reality. I am a complete asshole and don’t remember where I first saw it or who said it, so I apologize to whatever brilliant mind I am totally stealing this from. I originally latched onto it because I was about to go on submission (meaning editors and publishers are now deciding whether or not they want to buy my book), and the process of being on sub is known to be pretty brutal. So I found this quote and was like yes, this needs to be my motto while I am on sub. I need to do the things that make me joyful. I need to allow myself to feel the joy. Because otherwise, I might not survive this process with my mental health in tact. I immediately wrote “Joy is integral to survival” on the whiteboard above my desk so I would be forced to look at it while waiting to hear news about whether or not this book will be sold, or whether I’ve got to start the whole book writing process all over again.

Little did I know things were about to get so. much. worse. Now “Joy is integral to survival” has taken on a whole new meaning. Like, it feels a lot more literal now. In the beginning, it was I need to feel some joy so I don’t feel totally god awful throughout the submission process. Now it’s I need to feel some joy because otherwise I’m not going to survive this period of total life upheaval. And it is not easy. In fact, it’s hard AF. But I’m reminding myself to do it, every day. Find something that brings me joy.

Here’s some of the things bringing me join during lockdown:

My kid is still remarkably happy * I still really like my husband * Books * Our new espresso machine * Sleeping in * Staying up late * Video chats with friends * Baking * Writing * Playing games * Taking a walk * New podcast episodes

Am I joyful all day, every day? Fuck. no. But I’m finding those little moments, and you should too. Stay safe and healthy and home!
