Monday Movie Review: PS I Still Love You

Yeah, it’s Tuesday, but since I spent literally the entire day in bed yesterday feeling like absolute poo, I don’t want to hear any complaints! And given the whole staying in bed deal, I watched a lot of Netflix. And one of the things I watched was the To All the Boys sequel, PS I Still Love You.

PS I Still Love You continues the love story of Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo), whose fake dating/quiet shy girl meets uber popular jock set up is one of my favorites. Jenny Han’s books are some of my favorites because her voice is absolutely stellar and she always makes me laugh out loud. I found the first movie to be lacking in the voice department, and I kind of felt the same about this one. In part two, Lara Jean is dealing with some jealousy issues stemming from Peter’s past relationship with her former best friend Gen. When she comes back into contact with another recipient of one of her letters, John Ambrose MacLaren (Jordan Fisher), she starts to question her relationship with Peter. But ultimately, she decides Peter is the one for her, and they live happily ever after (for now).

Look, these movies are nothing resembling a cinematic masterpiece. They are cute and sweet and make me long for the good old days of high school (until I remember how much I hated high school). I didn’t think this one was as strong as the first, mainly because the conflict didn’t seem super developed. There were lots of moments that weren’t fully fleshed out, and I think they could have benefited from some higher stakes. Also, Kitty, who is one of my favorite characters from the books, is really too old at this point to be getting away with some of the things she says. It went from cute and charming to kind of annoying. I also missed the family connections in this one as those are one of the highlights in the book and first movie. I feel like TATBILB is a movie I could watch over and over again, but I think this one is a one and done. Cute, but nothing super compelling.

Overall Grade: B-
