My Favorite Movies of 2019

I saw a ton of great movies in 2019, so many that I started doing a weekly movie review post. But I still have so many more I want to see, both in theaters and streaming. I feel like I could sit around all day and watch movies, if someone wanted to, you know, pay me for it. But for now, this will have to suffice! Here are my top twelve movies of 2019, in no particular order.

Queen and Slim: I’m not sure why this movie isn’t nominated in every awards category ever because I thought it was absolutely brilliant. The story is gut-wrenching and relevant and the performances are fantastic. To me, this should be a best picture contender for sure. You can read my full thoughts here.

Honey Boy: This one is hard to watch if you are a parent (content warning for child abuse) but it is full of some of the best acting of the year, and the story is heart-breaking.

Knives Out: I laughed my ass off during this movie, it was an utter delight. Chris Evans and the sweater are just one highlight of the film, which is brilliantly told and acted. You can read my full thoughts here.

Jojo Rabbit: This is another heartbreaker, again full of some pretty stunning performances. It’s not easy to make a satire about Nazis in a world where Nazis are somehow making a comeback, but of course, Taika Waititi is the one who can make it work. You can read my full thoughts here.

Peanut Butter Falcon: I never would have predicted 2019 would be the year of Shia LaBeouf, but it was. His performance in Peanut Butter Falcon is stellar. You can read my full thoughts here.

Hustlers: I can’t get enough of this movie. Give me girl power any day of the week, and Constance Wu and JLo kill it here (along with the rest of the fantastic cast). I loved it so much I saw it twice. You can read my full thoughts here.

The Farewell: It’s difficult to make a movie about family that hasn’t already been done, but this was such a beautiful family portrait. I laughed, I cried. It was basically perfect. You can read my full thoughts here.

Avengers: Endgame: This one is a duh. I went through a lot of prep work to get to this movie! I think I saw Endgame ten times in the theater and I’ve probably watched it twenty more since it came out on streaming. I love all three hours of it and I will continue to watch it forever and ever.

Spider-Man: Far From Home: I didn’t know how any Marvel movie was going to follow Endgame, but this was the perfect bridge between Endgame and the next phase of the MCU. Tom Holland’s performance was perfect and it was just the right amount of action and emotion.

Late Night: This movie did not get nearly enough attention. Emma Thompson is absolutely brilliant in this poignant comedy. It was such a refreshing look at misogyny in the workplace (because women can be misogynists too!) and I thought it was perfect.

Booksmart: Another brilliant movie by a woman (like about half of this list). It’s witty and touching and relatable and relevant and I loved every second of it.

Captain Marvel: I mean, duh. I’ve been looking forward to this movie for a long time and it totally met my expectations. I’m super excited to see what comes next for Captain Marvel. You can read my full thoughts here.
