Monthly Recap: March 2019

Well hello again friends, and welcome to another monthly recap. 2019 is a quarter of the way done, believe it or not. March was another crazy month. I had my first three weddings of the season, we were still smack in the middle of house madness, oh, and I was trying to finish writing a book. I’m so tired.

On the goals front: Well this is an easy section this month because for the first time in a long time, I didn’t set any goals for March. It was that kind of month.

On the writing front: After some solid feedback from my beta readers, I decided to take the second half of my manuscript in a completely different direction. There is nothing quite like the feeling of yay I finished my book quickly morphing into shit I need to rewrite half my book. This manuscript has been a struggle y’all, and the only reason I haven’t given up on it is it has the potential to be really good. It’s just not there yet. So I will keep plugging away at it!

On the reading front: Soooooo I knocked out twenty books in March. Given that reading keeps me sane, it should come as no surprise that I turn to books during my times of stress. And I’ve had a lot of those lately. I’m going to break down my reads into separate sections just so it’s not one huge ass list of titles. Romances (review post coming soon!): Wicked and the Wallflower, Matchmaker’s List, Hate to Want You, It Takes Two, Duchess Deal, American Queen, Because You’re Mine, Once Ghosted Twice Shy, Wrong to Need You, How the Duke Was Won, American Prince, American King, Hurts to Love You, Beautiful Player, One Con Glory. Whew. YAs: Crown’s Fate, On the Come Up, Leia, Crown of Feathers. I also read Me Before You (which is NOT a romance). From now on, I’m also going to be mentioning how many of my monthly reads were written by authors of color. I could write a whole other post on why (and I probably will), but one of the best ways I can hold myself accountable is by publicly posting each month how many books I read by AoC. This was probably a better than normal month, but of the twenty books I read eight were by authors of color (note: I’m making this judgement solely based on author photos/what I know of the author’s background). That was a good month and it’s not even half, so time to work harder.

On the movie front: I saw five movies in March-Alita Battle Angel, Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel, and Gloria Bell. Alita was terrible. I honestly only went to see it because so many lame white boys were comparing it to Captain Marvel. They basically lost me from the moment the movie started when the CYBORG WITH A MECHANICAL BODY woke up and ate oranges for breakfast. She doesn’t have a fucking stomach. Please. It only got worse from there. Captain Marvel was amazing, you can read my full thoughts here. I was really excited for Gloria Bell, and full disclosure, I missed the last half hour of the movie because Squirt wasn’t feeling well and I had to go pick him up from school. In the trailer, the film looked like it was going to be hilarious, and it just wasn’t for me. I’ll probably watch it when it’s streaming so I can see the end, but what I saw of it was disappointing.

On the house front: We closed on our new house! Woohoo! It was a lot of work and stress (and money, obvs) but we finally closed on the house. We don’t take possession until the end of April, and probably won’t move until mid May, but dammit, that house is ours!

Thank you for tuning in to this month’s recap! Let’s kick some April ass!
