Taking in the Sights of Los Alamos
In November, I was able to travel to Los Alamos and spend a few days in what is quickly becoming one of my favorite cities. I discovered Los Alamos and the Alamo Motel a couple of years ago when I coordinated a wedding there, and I’ve been in love with it ever since. I spent three days there last year to get some work done on my latest novel, but I also spent some time exploring the tiny strip of town and some of the cool shops and restaurants they have to offer. As I mentioned in my hotel review of the Alamo Motel, I was there Tuesday through Thursday, and unfortunately, much of the town shuts down on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so I didn’t get to check out as many places as I would have liked. But that just means I’ll have to go back! Here are some of the highlights from my time in Los Alamos…
Bob’s Well Bread Bakery was on my must visit list, as I had stopped there on my previous trip, twice. Sadly, this little spot is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, otherwise I would have eaten there every day. I spent my last morning drinking coffee and eating a homemade English muffin on their little balcony, and it was heaven. Great food, good coffee, and a good place to sit down and write.

On my one full day in Los Alamos, Wednesday, it was chilly and rainy, but the weather cleared up just long enough for me to spend some time walking up and down Bell Street, which is the main drag of Los Alamos. The Alamo Motel, plus all of my other stops, were all along Bell Street, which means no driving, which is always a plus in my book. There are lots of cute sights to see along Bell. I don’t know why this gas station stood out to me, but I thought it was adorable.

Plenty on Bell was actually one of the few spots open on Wednesday, so that’s where I ate breakfast and did some reading. I had a delicious two egg breakfast with all of the fixings, and it was super yummy. I would definitely return to Plenty on Bell to try out their lunches too. Plus, the front tables have a great view of the rest of the street.

After breakfast at Plenty, I strolled around the Los Alamos Depot Mall, which is a huge antique shop with a hundred little booths. It was pretty rainy during my walk there, so I didn’t take too many pictures, but I did find a couple of hidden gems inside. Even if you aren’t a huge antique lover, it’s an interesting spot to stop and poke around. Of course, the highlight of the trip was my time at the Alamo Motel. I spent most of my time either in my room, or sitting out in one of the common areas, and it was absolutely gorgeous.

The only real bummer about the Alamo Motel stay was that their little wine bar, which sits at the front of the property, wasn’t open at all during my stay. I would have loved to have been able to drink some wine while reading or writing, but it’s just one more reason to plan to go back!

Some of the places that were on my list to try that I didn’t make it to were Bodega Los Alamos, Casa Dumetz Wines, and Full of Life Flatbread. I’m thinking of making my pilgrimage to Los Alamos an annual deal, so hopefully I’ll get the chance to try them next year!
